Image processing can range from simple applications that encompass photographic manipulation, to advanced operations such as augmented reality that add photo-realistic 3D elements to the scene.  Whatever the application, the underlying code is focused on the algorithmic manipulation of image data to create the final product.

One of the challenges of image processing is in speed and optimization.  While long-running algorithms may be simpler to theoretically design, most systems require fast computation in order to achieve the necessary run-time requirements.  This will often require mathematical functions for approximate across the image space, or some degree of lossy compression.  An effective algorithm will attempt to minimize the loss while providing adequate speed and performance.

Image processing can often also be extended to video manipulation.  While video manipulation is often a category in and of itself, most of the basic image processing components can be applied to video as well.  One of the advantages of video is that the moving image can provide more perceptive data and a fuller understanding of the world.  It is also more challenging, however, to add augmented reality elements to video, as they will require real-time shaders and effective algorithms for perceptive adjustment.

As technology is continually improving, so image processing algorithms are becoming more advanced.  Images can now often be resized to various dimensions while keeping the same aspect ratio.  This is done through a semi-lossy method, by iteratively removing the least-pertinent data in the image.  Other advances enable even higher rates of compression, especially with regards to video on the web.
