The first step to a software prototyping project is requirements gathering and analysis.  The system architect and UI designer will meet with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to explore opportunities for improvements over existing processes or bring and document team ideas.  This could be part of an initial requirements gather stage, or as a portion of a brainstorming and strategy session.  Either way, once the requirements have been developed, the team will take the ideas to the next level by finding opportunities for further improvement, through implementation of industry best practices, applying new ideas or technology, or creative problem solving of existing pain points in the system.

Once the concept has been developed, the wireframing and database design, if applicable, can take place.  Wireframing consists of creating mockups of key system interfaces and concepts, with a focus on creating documents that can then be used by the development team to build the actual software.  Wireframing is an opportunity to discuss design and conceptual configuration, while still enabling integration of changes from the client without requiring rework of the system.  Changes during the wireframing phase are generally much easier than changes once the software development has actually begun.

With the wireframes complete and design documents in place, the actual software prototyping can begin.  Project management is critical at this point to make sure that the team completes according to schedule.  Weekly checkpoints and consistent client meetings are important to make sure that key stakeholders are on the same page with the development progress.  Both during and upon completion of the software, testing ensures that the software both meets requirements and is stable and bug free on completion.
