The user experience and information architecture of an application has three primary components – the wireframes, graphic design, and interactive elements.  Wireframes generally define the website screens, primary form elements and components, and how the application items will link together.  The graphic design defines the brand and website style.  The interactive elements consist of the animations and dynamic client-side response to clicks and events.

After the initial brainstorming meeting and concept development, the wireframes are the first component of the design specification document.  Wireframes are often kept in a sketch format, so that viewers of the document do not fixate on layout and alignment, but rather on the information components and user experience.  If a database component is involved, it will help define the wireframes and fields that make up the app.  After development of the wireframes, all key project stakeholders should review them for accuracy and make sure that they meet the project requirements.  Changes are easy to make during the wireframing phase, and much more difficult further down the pipeline when development actually begins.

Once the wireframes are complete, the graphic design can be developed.  This usually consists, at the least, of a pixel-perfect mockup of the primary screen of the app, along with mockups of other screens deemed relevant by the designer.  If complex interface components are used, the grids and form elements may be part of the graphic design mockups as well.  The design influences both the readability / usability of the site, the brand, and how the target audience will perceive the app.  Finally, once the design has been approved, interactive elements may be developed that provide engagement, and can also improve usability.
